What does Seamless Cost?

Over the past five years, traveling between Vienna and Seoul has felt like moving between different timelines. Visiting Seoul every two years, I kept arriving into a city I didn't quite recognize. The most striking change was delivery. In Vienna, I still walk to the bakery in the morning. In Seoul, I noticed I had stopped doing that entirely. There was no need.

But seamlessness is not the same as frictionlessness. During my visit to Beijing, I could buy another person's time to stand in a queue, or hire someone to drive my own car while I was stuck in traffic. Other people had become almost ghost-like. An unwelcome interruption.

I was looking at it from the wrong side.

The rider who left groceries at the door, the worker managing orders behind the screen: they were there. The seamlessness worked precisely because of that.

Working at a smoothie bar in Seoul in 2019, I found myself standing on the other side. The fruit was running low. Customers kept arriving. Delivery orders kept coming in. All at once, with no pause. The platform had set its own estimated delivery times without any knowledge of what was actually happening in the kitchen. When those times could not be met, the failure was mine.

I kept noticing the riders waiting outside, under the same pressure. I knew they were caught in something similar. What I didn't know was the full shape of it.

I had also spent nearly four years inside a different kind of loop — as a social media content strategist, learning which hours to post, which hashtags still worked, watching organic reach shrink until paid promotion was no longer optional. Every time the algorithm updated, the same decoding began again. The work did not get easier. It got harder. I left the job with a sense of helplessness, before I could name for what was happening.

Watching delivery workers decode the same kind of system, I recognized the loop. The platform learns from what you do, and returns it as a tighter constraint on what you can.

Platforms did not eliminate friction. They redistributed it. What looks like waiting time is, in fact, where the hardest work begins.
