Ctrl+Shift+E: Merge Visible (2018) started with painting from a screen and the growing suspicion that the screen was already the more real surface.
Search engines had made almost anything into an image. A place, an object, a person, reduced to pixels I could hold in my palm. I began to wonder if I actually knew any of these things, or only their compressed likeness. My phone had become a better filter than my own eyes, and I had stopped noticing the difference.
To paint "well," I had to take a low-resolution image found online and render it in high resolution. But the place I was painting was already blurred, already fragmented. Why did rendering it more precisely than what I saw make it feel more real?
I started to doubt whether a brushstroke could belong to anyone. Mine looked like something I'd seen before. Wasn't this a gesture borrowed without meaning to? I couldn't even be sure it looked good. I no longer trusted what my own hand produced. What I trusted was the trace Photoshop left when it imitated a brush—cleaner, more convincing, more real than mine.
So I began painting Photoshop's imitation of painting.
Painting bled into print, print into industrially painted walls, all sharing the same digital color code—flat, without a trace. Pixelated screens were remade in oil, in print, on walls. The most classical medium kept producing the least classical surface.
I wasn't sure anymore what I was making, or what surface I was painting on. Some days the question felt enormous. Other days it sat next to much smaller ones. What to do after graduation. What to have for dinner.

Ctrl+Shift+E: Merge Visible (2018)
